Tina Barney and Julianna Barwick

Thursday is Museum day in Minneapolis. Lecture talks at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the Walker Art Center (my old work place) is free from 5pm-9pm. I could make a long blog of all great things I saw today including the dramatic Sports Show, the Frank Gaard show, and the bizarre and fascinating Lifelike exhibition at the Walker. However, the most potent artist's I ran across today was photographer Tina Barney and musician Julianna Barwick.

Today, I met my Grandma and her friend at the lecture and slideshow of photographer Tina Barney. I honestly had not heard of her or her work prior to this lecture. Here is a good Tina Barney link to see some of her incredible photographs.

Tina Barney's photographs are incredibly complex and brilliantly composed. I found myself drooling over the narratives, textures and colors. She talked a lot about repetition and negative space and how different parts of her photos played off other elements in the same photo. When I got to my parents house after the lecture I decided to take two photos of my parents trying to use some of the ideas that Barney was speaking about. Here is what I came up with:

If you happen to be reading this, I would love your impression of the two photos. Which one is more compelling, visually interesting and what narratives do they suggest?

Later that night I sped off to the Walker Art Center to visit old friends and the new shows. Little did I know that Julianna Barwick was performing some impressive surreal looping vocals in one of the galleries.

Juliana Barwick, who I also had not heard of before being pleasantly surprised by her mid-gallery performance, was incredible. The gallery sound shot her vocals right through your soul, and by the end of each 10 minute song it sounded like gangs of singing angels flying over your heard. If you are not familiar with her music, I highly suggest looking her up.

My Creepy Photo for You

On occasion I will take photographs. I do not pretend to be very good at it. In the woods only a few steps from my place of work I saw a couple of deer. If you look closely you can see at least three in this photo. They were standing and staring at my from the end of the parking lot. I decided to follow them in hopes of getting more photos of them.

The creepy photograph below was my favorites of the batch of pictures I took after chasing the deer into this clearing:
After stumbling into this clearing I ended up spending 20 minutes trying to take a good photo of the bizarre miniature forest that existed behind the building. The location is Minnetonka, Minnesota. I ended up using the shadow of my arm and the flash to get the photo. The roots and the sky help to make it an interesting image. Thanks to the deer who led me and my camera into this odd space.

Find my business card!

On my MegaBus travels from Minneapolis to Madison we had a 30 minute rest stop at a Pilot Travel Station gas station. This gas station had some very nice accomodies for bus driver, like a row of single room showers. During my exploration I came to this wall of business cards. It was overwhelming on the eyes and I knew I wanted my card to join the party.

Your challenge is to find my business card amoungst the many on display.

If you enjoy this post you might enjoy my Hidden Art Hunts or my halloween Waldo at Mall of America post. Definbately make sure to also see my free printable mazes and see the Free Art Fridays.

I wasn't meant to play the son

sometimes i find myself lost in a soundtrack of images. telling a story filled with demons. a world without heroes. and fear walking up and down my spine. the tarantula dances. when the dance is over the tarantula buys bright red lipstick. 44 little canisters of cottage cheese and one stamp away from a free sandwich.

Hieronymus Bosch wants to play a game of Where's Waldo. Where's Aleyt? Aleyt? Time is ticking on your Garden of Earthly Delights, Hieronymus. Nathalie Djurberg is the new queen.

The Pudding Factory Photo Story

Dancing, body painting, art, music all inside a Pudding Factory

This is the photo documentation of my trip from Portland, Maine to Hoboken, New Jersey for a grand art show! It was my first time in New Jersey and this post is dedicated to Shandra Stark, for putting on the show.

3AM, I woke up. Groggy. And with some interesting bed hair. I had a 45 minute walk to the bus station so... I struck a pose

I struck this pose and rushed out the door with a suitcase filled with bearded bunnies.

I took two buses. It took 6 hours. I sat in some very interesting bus stations terminals and took two NYC subway rides. I wandered the streets of New York until finally finding the PATH subway and found my way to Hoboken, New Jersey.

The Pudding Factory was crammed into this business district. Auto shops on one side, band practice happening on the other side. From the outside you would never guess there was anything fun on the inside.

Just peeking up the steps, I knew I was going to like this place. I watched a group of people dismantle a giant indoor trampoline, trying to make room for the bands and a dance floor.

This is River Clark's mannequin. By this time, all the artists and musicians were flooding into the building. I was building the auction room and running errands. I met Ocean Clark, who I managed never to take a photo of somehow. His work is in the background of many of the following photos.

I set up a wall of bearded bunnies above this piano. You cannot really tell from here, but the white spots on the wall are vintage sheet music used as wall paper.

Herra Terra, the band, began setting up.
Artist William Springfield finished up his prints, as the VIP gathering began.
View from the ladder.

Then musician Lyle Divinski sat down and sang some really amazing songs
James McAndrew followed, with a great performance.
People started filling up the VIP section. This is 4 floors below where the bands were going to play.
The view from the street. It is funny to think behind this very unassuming garage door is the biggest green screen in New Jersey. Tonight, it also was home to a bomb art show.
I got to meet these 5 artists, from all across the country. Amazing artists, amazing guys.
Body painter, Kirk Dupuis, showed up to do some black light body painting on model Jessica Mellow.

Herra Terra rocked upstairs, and the glowing hoola hoops made an appearance. I think they broke by the end of the night, or at least were dismantled and spread around the building.
Kirk invited me to jump in and do some painting with him.
I decorated Jessica's back. This is what it looked like before the black light.
Super Volcano was the second band to play. While I missed most of Herra Terra's performance, I was dancing during Super Volcano's killer set.
I noticed the chalk art happening and quickly added a sketch to the ground.

I was in-between carrying artwork up four flights of stairs for the auction portion of the event, so I only had a minute to do anything with the chalk.
Jessica Mellow and the lead singer of SuperVolcano
His face kind of became the torch of Jessica's statue of liberty theme. Kirk, was painting some really interesting things. People took a million photos of these projects while they were happening.
Here is my contribution for the black light body painting. I worked around the peace logo.
Bianca also volunteered to be painted. She had mentioned to me being interested, and Kirk painted her while the bands were performing behind her.

It is always funny how a photo of dancing crowds can often look like a photo of motionless crowds. There was much movement here.
Mark Williams took these great photos, showcasing the finished work.
Again, Mark Williams photo, of Kirk Dupuis bodypainting, on Bianca, and Jessica Mellow

the next morning, slightly hung over, I stumbled back upstairs to find a deserted room. I take a quick photo and rushed out the door to catch my bus back to Portland, Maine. In the end, it felt like a one day dream. So many things happening all at once, sandwiched between 14 hours of busing and subways.

Day 698

My good friend, Kris Ericson runs a one photo a day blog. I was the featured subject matter for day 698 as evident in the photo above.

I have been the photo of the day in a handful of other photos in the past. You would have to scroll pretty far back to find them, but they are there. Me wearing a mask, portrait me (using that one as my facebook profile photo), me killing a canvas and a variety of other photos.

It is worth scrolling back to previous photos to see some of the great captures Kris has been able to get. He is now over 700 days of photos. I know he sometimes takes dozens and dozens of pictures before he is happy with the one photo he must choose per day. If you get the chance to follow any blog, especially if you enjoy photography, choose Kris' one photo a day blog.

7 photos

a few nights ago, trying to ignore sleep, I decided to take a few photographs. These are all unedited photos from an hour long photo shoot in the middle of the night at my apartment. I do not altogether like the colors, and lack of contrast I get with my digital camera, and did try editing a number of these photos with GIMP, but in the end I wanted to post my raw favorites. They all seem to act as a cumulative self portrait in a way.

I am inspired by Kris Ericson's photo blog, Jesse Valley's upcoming fall photo show, and Argente Photographie.

Art battle

If you did not attend the red hot art festival this weekend, you missed out. You missed out on an all day rain storm, but you also missed out on great music by 30 bands, 100 artists from all over Minnesota (and beyond) and most of all, you missed out on Billy Vs Matt 12: the portrait art war.

I will be posting a bunch of pictures soon, but matt semke and myself spent the 14 hours at the festival painting people's portraits, having the crowd vote on their favorites, and then shooting the losing portrait with a super soaker filled with black ink.

We did 16 different portraits and Matt and myself tied 8 to 8. We were the only booth without a tent, and we got SOAKED as you can see by my wet coat in the photo below. The rain and wind did not stop us from creating art. Yet another chapter in Billy Vs Matt has closed, Round 13 is to be announced.

Return soon to see more photos.

Day 204: portrait of Kelsey and me

Kris Ericson runs a photography blog called One Photo a Day, he has broken the 200th day of a new photo each day and I was lucky to be featured in the Day 204 photo with my girlfriend Kelsey. I happen to really enjoy the photo and wanted to post it on my blog.

I enjoy the fantasy element, the masks, the brilliant colors and the composition. Just one of many photos that Kris has been posting on his blog. If you scroll through his posts you can find a few other pictures of me, as Kris was also one of the Sledding Art Battle photographers (although i still need to post more of his photos).

I sure I am biased, but I think Kelsey looks great in this photo, like she does in all. For those that are not familiar with my girlfriend Kelsey, make sure to check out some of her artwork available for sale on Etsy: Dill Plant Jewelry.

I am very excited to see what photo Kris creates and posts each day on his blog, and I check his blog obsessively, if you enjoy good photos you should do the same. One Photo a Day.
