Sketchbook Friday: Mercurius Python as a Three Headed Dragon

Mercurius Python as a three headed dragon. Based on a drawing from 1600 Germany. See the original drawing. My fantasy drawing, medieval drawing, German influenced drawing was created with watercolor and colored pencil on paper.  The creature was simply too interesting not to replicate. Three bizarre sun heads, a bearded devil face on the breast, giant wings, a long point tail and two stubby legs. Hard not to fall in love with this cute little character. As you have seen I have been focusing a lot of attention on biblical, mythological creatures in my last few sketchbook Friday posts.

Each Friday at noon I scan in one new sketch or drawing from one of my many sketchbooks. Many times my sketches are ideas for larger projects that you might find on my fine art website William Hessian dot com, or as projects right here on my Bearded Bunny art blog. If you enjoy these sketches make sure to also see my Favorite 20 sketches from 2011 or go back and check out all of the sketchbook friday posts.

If you want to own some of my work, you can always find great deals on my artwork and stickers at my Etsy shop.  Do not forget to subscribe to my blog and never miss another post.

Illustration: 'Impossibility Goblin with a big key'

Illustration Friday's theme of the week: Impossibility

This is my second entry to Illustration Friday, and when I saw the word "impossibility" the only thing that came to my mind was a big key, trying to fit in a small key hole. It then evolved into a goblin stuck in a jail cell, and his captors playing a cruel joke on him, by supplying him a huge key and a very small key hole.

The entire thing was drawn with prisma color pencils on black construction paper. I drew it in between teaching art classes during the day. Took me about 90 minutes to complete.

I love looking at everyone else's rendition of the word, "impossibility". If you like to draw, get involved:

Custom Winged Bunny for Birthday Gift

Monday, August the 25th was my dad's birthday. He happens to be the biggest collector of my bearded bunnies to date. I am not sure how many he owns, but it is a very high percentage of the overall number. Last Christmas for his birthday I created a bearded bunny in a postal uniform to honor him, since he is a postal carrier. For his birthday I modified my dragon bunny and created a silver and gold dragon variation including wings that spread out far beyond the edge of the frame:

The great about creating variation of my bearded bunnies series is that it is a fun way to pay homage to your own creations and give them new life. Often times its easy to get sick of your own designs simply be seeing them too often and for long periods of time. Being able to step back and add or subtract from your creation to make something different is a good way to fall in love with it all over again. It can also be a painful lesson in turning something beautiful into to something terrible, but that process has its own benefits. I am reminded of Jasper John or Andy Warhol or Jim Dine who used printing processes to made millions of copies or variations of the same images, American Flags, Mickey Mouse, Marilyn Monroe, and many others. I find this process more fun that one could imagine.

In the very near future I will show you pictures from the 50 other bearded bunny variations I did for Art O Mat antique art vending machines. Found all across america. Stay tuned for that!
