Sketchbook Friday: O Might Monsters

Oh what a battle those creatures are waging. 

You freakish aliens using us like pawns to rape the land. 

But we like it, we enjoy it.  

You monsters are just playing a game with us. Pitting us against each other. Drooling on us. Farting on us. We stink of your stink. We will pretend to enjoy your games. 

Love us almighty monsters. 

We love how your hairy knuckles tickle our fancy heads as your slimy claws wiggle into our hearts. Let us live on your back and build a city in your boils. 

Hand us metal tanks, and show us airplanes in the sky. 

Let us dance on your scars and wounds, it will be a choreographed dance like worker ants in a marching line. Doing your bidding with every hip thrust and fist pump. Your stink is our scent. 

Play with us, make us great.

Each Friday at noon I scan in one new sketch or drawing from one of my many sketchbooks. Sticker Monster Art

Inspired by graffiti artists around the world and groups like Free Art Friday, I've been drawing on label paper and putting stickers up in unique areas. This is my version of guerrilla art and do not consider it vandalism, since most of the work is in very hidden locations and will eventually peel away and dissolve in the elements. I enjoy creating hidden art for people to find and have done a dozen free miniature art hunts all across America.

The monster below is hidden on the roof of a building, drawn with markers, on sticker paper, and water proofed with an acrylic glaze. I am trying to decide if I should make copies of these big monster stickers and print them out for people to buy, 2 monsters for 5 dollars. I'm not sure if anyone would want them. And if not, I enjoy creating them and hiding them all over the place.

Since hidden art and free art is a passion of mine, it seems only natural to extend my work into projects like this:

Free Art Friday

In my search for hidden art links I found the flickr group, Free Art Friday and had to get involved. Below is my first contribution to the group. The gallery is filled with other great hidden art, and artworks.

My work is marker and colored pencil on beveled wood. The work is hidden on a roof in Jamestown, North Dakota. The set of pictures gives away the location, but wanted to show them to give you an idea of how fun hiding free art can be. This particular location is what I look at every day from my artist apartment (see photo 3), and on top of this furniture store there is a little shack, which has been the canvas to some inexperienced graffiti artists (graffiti is not very popular, nor impressive in North Dakota-see photo 1 & 2). The little shack was inhabited by an old hermit for year, according to the employees of the furniture store. The alley side of the building has a set of rickety wooden stairs leading to the top of the store. The building appears to have been abandoned for years now, but the structure lives on as an oddity, and homage to the mysterious resident. None of the workers had any idea how he had permission to live there, or if anyone knew at the time. The cool thing is that he found external plugs to steal electricity from the store, and would invite people over to watch fireworks or layout in the sun. I would love to meet this guy, if he is still around. i figured it was a brilliant place to hide my first Free Art Friday submission.

I personally love all free art projects, and the infusion of art with the public.
I think all artists on every level should participate in free arts friday in some respect. Free art is good exposure, and the adrenaline of creating an artwork meant to given away for a random person to find is very rewarding. The photos that result from such ventures are also compelling images on their very own.

miniature creature sculptures

A side project of mine, is creating my own card game. I have designed about 60 small drawings to be used in the prototype, which is currently being organized for play testing. At the very same time, I had an idea to create some miniature creature, which are loosely based on the card game storyline.  

I designed three small figures, only one has been painted. I figured since I am not sure what I plan to do with them at this point, I might as well post them here. I have made three pages of notes which describes a hidden art project by using miniature creature sculptures, and may or may not correlate to a game. Creating tiny monsters reminds me of many toys I had, and loved, as a child. Battle Beasts, Monsters in my Pocket, Army Ants, Dino Riders and a number of others. If I ever find myself with an abundance of money, designing and sculpting a series of short run miniature toys will be a project I will pursue. Here are the three sample prototypes:

These cards are being drawn to fill my playtesting set of 26, to learn more about how to become a playtester for my game, or to learn more about the game and its step by step development please check out my live journal site dedicated to my monster card game.

My playtesting sets are making grand progress and I hope to have some ready to be sent out within the next month.

Weird Monsters (.com)
Justin, a music producer is the owner and creators of weird monsters. The blog features artist submitted monsters, featured on his blog and linked to the artist's website. Artist Kevin McLaughlin created the weird monster seen above, and is among a number of interesting artist who have submitted to this blog. The site has been around since June 2007 and updates with a new monster 2-3 times a week.

My Monster
I am currently sketching out a few ideas for my very own weird monster which I will be submitting to the blog upon completion. Once I have created my monster I will surely update the results of my monster.
