Turtle Art Hunt
After a horrible disaster, losing all of my images from the art hunt, i managed to pull together all images I could find from my Salt Lake city art hunt. It was in Salt Lake that I hid 10 miniature turtle artworks in the public parks inviting Utah residents to come find my artwork.
The video is one of six that I have created to feature each art hunt completed this summer as part of my art tour. I just recently announced the biggest art hunt ever in my favorite city in the world, Minneapolis.
You can find more information, pictures and videos about my art hunts at: www.williamhessian.com

Minneapolis Art Hunt Press Release
8/18/2008 Press Release (as released on www.williamhessian.com
Minneapolis Miniature Art Hunt
Star Tribune
Date: Friday, October 17th 2008 at 2pm
Time: sunrise to sundown each following day until all works are found
Location: Public Parks of Minneapolis
The Hunt
William Hessian, a Minneapolis artist, is challenging his favorite city in the world to find his artwork! The announcement to bring his art hunt to Minneapolis comes only two weeks after completing six art hunts across the united states in part of his summer long Art as Treasure art tour. Art hunts were completed in Salt Lake City, Utah; Costa Mesa, California and Portland, Oregon to name a few. The art hunts bring people to the parks, and art to the people.
On October Friday, October 17th, the challenge for Minnesotans will be to find one of 35 two- inch by two- inch miniature artworks hidden in public parks in Minneapolis. Each artwork is an original hand drawn and painted Octopus by William Hessian. Thirty-five artworks could be hidden in any and all public parks in Minneapolis adding to the challenge of the hunt.
Why an Octopus? And Why Thirty Five?
William Hessian explains that 35 hidden artworks is a tribute to the victims of the 35w bridge falling down, and the bridge being reopened. William lives in Minneapolis and was greatly effected by the collapse of the bridge. The October Octopus was chosen to represent Minneapolis because, "when an Octopus loses an arm in a conflict, its arm grows back bigger and stronger than before. Minneapolis is like the Octopus in that way: when a bridge falls down, it is going to be back bigger and better than before," Hessian said. The hunt appropriately takes place near the unveiling date of Minneapolis' new 35W bridge.
Finding the Art
The tiny treasures are really small, I mean really really small. Measuring only 2 inches by 2 inches, the artworks are not much bigger than a common quarter and will be easily overlooked by many unknowing park goers. However the artwork is hidden in plain site and a series of visual photo clues will be published on William's website (www.williamhessian.com). William said, “At 2:00pm on Friday 17th, 2008 ten very obscure photographs will be updated on the website. The photographs will feature the artwork in their hidden locations.” In past hunts the hard clues do not offer much help only giving a slight hints at what the artwork might be attached to: a brick wall maybe, bark of a tree, or concrete of a building. The initial clues are meant to be vague, however, the following days will release more revealing clues until all 35 Minneapolis octopi are found. The winners keep the art and win an additional small prize to be announced. William stresses that the goal is to provide artwork for those who want it most, as opposed to only those who can afford it. While the art hunt is open to the public, many winners of his previous nine hunts have been children, families and geocachers. William often enjoys those people who do not necessarily take the typical form of a treasure hunters.
Funding and Sponsorship
The support of donations and business sponsorships are crucial in making the art hunt a success. The first important element is getting the publicity from the local news media Star Tribune. The Salt Lake Tribune (http://www.sltrib.com/themix/ci_9986879) and Portland's KATU (http://www.katu.com/news/outdoors/24043754.html) are two good examples of past news articles written about William's art hunts this summer. Local businesses, galleries, and organizations are instrumental in helping to support the hunt by providing small $15-25 gift certificates and be listed as a supporter on the website. Postcards will also be mailed around town, to help promote the hunt and attract sponsorships. Individuals are invited to help support the hunts by making small donations or purchasing other artwork like Bearded Bunnies created by William Hessian.
Art in the Park
On Sunday night October 19th from 2pm-7pm William will take a break from updating the art hunt website and spend five hours creating art in the park with any and all aspiring artists (the park is yet to be determined). William will provide paper, and supplies to anyone who would like to stop by and meet and draw with the artist. Winners of the hunt will also be able to claim their prizes during the paint in the park. Another location, gallery or hot spot will be determined for other winners to claim prizes during the rest of the week.

I've lost everything...
I am depressed.
In a disasterous moment (5 minutes ago) I realized I'd lost everything off my computer.
Since starting this art blog, I have had a blast creating posts about my artwork, other artists, and other art related topics. The last 6 or 7 weeks most of my posts have been focused on and written while I was on my American art tour. I successfully created miniature art hunts in 6 different cities in America.
This Art as Treasure tour has changed my life. I have met great people, created new art, videos, miniature hunts and got to visit places I've never seen before... and now it feels likes it is all erased.
My Brand New 2007 HP Pavilion laptop had given me multiple headaches during my art tour, including losing wireless capabilities, which after 6 hours on the phone with tech service the HP guy tells me every once in a while the wireless card just simply goes out....I'm standing in Jamestown, North Dakota, home of my second art hunt of the tour thinking, "How the heck am I going to create art hunts, post visual clues on my website and edit videos online with Jumpcut from coffee shops and libraries....WITHOUT THE INTERNET?"
Flush 30 dollars down the drain to buy a wireless card for my computer was my solution. It was a successful temporary fix. (i am planning to send the bill to HP and ask for reembersement)
The art tour continues, Billings, Montana; Portland, Oregon; Costa Mesa, California; the beach and the ocean; Salt Lake City, Utah and Yellowstone National Park. Each place we spent a week experiencing amazing things, and amazing people. All this was recorded with video and photographs.
Until now.
I made a back up disc of my art tour files. Everything. From day one to day 45, over 80 short videos and 600 pictures. Memories captured forever. Having less than 5 days left on my warranty, I sent in my computer for repairs; to fix my non-working wireless capabilities. In the process of repairs, they switched out my hard drive. I literally just set up and plugged it in, all excited to put all of my art tour files back onto the computer, only to find the disc empty.
I typically test each back up disc to make sure it worked, but in the hussel and bussel of completing this art tour and trying to get my computer fixed in a timely manner, I have essentially flushed the images of the most important 6 weeks of my professional and personal life down the drain.
This sickness will stay with me for a while. I guess this means I will not be able to put together my Salt Lake city video....which is VERY sad.
Kelsey, the lone companion with me for the last 6 weeks has told me to treat this like a fire. Try to be happy with what you have, and move on. Good advice. Just hard for me to accept.

The Next Big Push
Newspapers
During my American art tour this summer, my art hunts hit six state newspapers. The main flow of traffic to my website and my free miniature art hunts came from these articles, most notably in the Salt Lake Tribune and KATU Portland. My next step is to write a new article expressing my thanks to each city & news media for help in making my art hunt successful. I should be spending these moments writing this blog, to write the letters to the editors. Along with a few pictures, a recapping of the hunt, I will be trying to propose a future art hunt in their city. The goal will be to bring more people to my website to see the completed hunt pictures and movies and drum up demand for future art hunts.
The Videos
Yahoo! and Jumpcut sponsored a series of videos depicting my art tour this summer. There is only one more video left to be completed in the series (featuring salt lake city). You can watch my art tour videos on my website or in previous posts on this blog. Once the final video is edited on the Jumpcut website I will be pressing Yahoo! to feature my videos and lead people to watch and get involved with the online video editing program Jumpcut.
The Minneapolis Proposal
Then, once all of my thank yous are finished will come a proposal to the city I live in, Minneapolis, for a giant miniature artwork hunt. The proposal will hopefully be met with open arms as I plan to get Minneapolis' art scene behind my next big Art as Treasure project! The animal selected for Minneapolis' miniature art subject matter....the octopus. Why? I will reveal it in a future blog.
Please make sure to browse my blog and check out all of the new projects I am working on.

the art tour has begun
kelsey and myself are currently in Jamestown, North Dakota hiding miniature artwork all over town. This hunt happens to take place during the 125th Anniversary celebration of Jamestown. This includes a parade, a beard growing contest, street dances, air show, grand opening of a new super walmart (right behind the old non-super walmart).
the reason i am forced to blog with words, instead of with a sexy video is because my laptop has all of a sudden lost its ability to pick up wireless. It has never done this before. My computer tells me that my WLAN is disabled. So here i sit on a borrowed computer typing away my adventures instead of showing you.
however, once my computer is up and working again the videos will appear. (hopefully soon)
meanwhile, i've got more buffalo to hide in the public parks of Jamestown for the art as treasure art tour.
Stay Tuned....

Only 3 days away from my first miniature art hunt!

The first of six miniature art hunts I am performing this summer begins May 29th. St. Louis Park, Minnesota; my home town, is the first to start on the hunt for ten original artworks. Prizes and award ceremony provided by Parktacular
Check out the 60 different tiny (1 inch by 1.5 inches) SLP's Splash into Summer examples shown above, and also read more about the location of all six hunts and see visual clues on the Art as Treasure website.
The last few weeks I have been slaving over the computer writing postcards to galleries, art teacher, art centers', newspapers, ect trying to promote my art hunts in each individual city. I am also trying to figure out a good way to find small business sponsor to offer gift certificates to the winners of each artwork. It has been a hard treck to this point, and I have hours of busy work, phone calls, faxes, emails and letters to mail out before I am done with this process.
Check out the video I made pleaing for donation to help support the gas prices during my art tour.....boy did I pick a rough time to go on a cross country road trip.
