Red Dragon: Sketchbook Friday

The Dragon was able to emerge from the scribbles of the collaborative efforts of Kenny and myself (William Hessian). The red pencil has become a regular utensil in our rotation of materials. The way the dragon took shape was mysterious and the very ominous additions seemed to have a lot of meaning to the history of this mythical dragon. The lightning bolt seemed especially important. And if you like Dragons you should check out my Dragon Maze.

Each Friday at noon I scan in one new sketch or drawing from one of my many sketchbooks. Many times my sketches are ideas for larger projects that you might find on my fine art website William Hessian dot com, or as projects right here on my Bearded Bunny art blog. If you enjoy these sketches make sure to also see my Favorite 20 sketches from 2011 or go back and check out all of the sketchbook friday posts.

Sketchbook Friday: Mercurius Python as a Three Headed Dragon

Mercurius Python as a three headed dragon. Based on a drawing from 1600 Germany. See the original drawing. My fantasy drawing, medieval drawing, German influenced drawing was created with watercolor and colored pencil on paper.  The creature was simply too interesting not to replicate. Three bizarre sun heads, a bearded devil face on the breast, giant wings, a long point tail and two stubby legs. Hard not to fall in love with this cute little character. As you have seen I have been focusing a lot of attention on biblical, mythological creatures in my last few sketchbook Friday posts.

Sketchbook Friday: Seven Headed Dragon

Ancient Mythology Art. This sketch was directly inspired an old biblical wall painting. The composition was borrowed almost verbatim, however my colors and ink work is unique. The end result is almost a finished drawing, but it started out a quick marker drawing, that evolved into a watercolor. I had a lot of fun creating it and working on all the details on the Seven Headed Dragon. My favorite part is all the dragon faces and the golden crowns on their heads.

Dragon Card

In the small amount of free time I have in-between starting two new jobs, one at the Walker Art Center and the other as a LEGO teacher, and doing the biggest art hunt here in Minneapolis, I am creating art cards to trade with artists all over the world.

A while ago I joined a couple ATC groups (artist trading card) on Yahoo, and I met some very cool people. I was looking forward to having some free time to begin drawing and trading cards with many artists. I have not gotten very far into the actual trading portion of the group, since I am trying to do projects that can make me a little money so I can afford to pay rent first.

Here is a dragon I have just completed. It is my own dragon design, called a Lym dragon. Which is also known as a kind of luck dragon, like Never Ending Story, only Lym dragons are smaller like ferrets with wings and wings for ears. I designed this type of dragon for a massive fantasy story that I would like to write sometime in my life.

Custom Winged Bunny for Birthday Gift

Monday, August the 25th was my dad's birthday. He happens to be the biggest collector of my bearded bunnies to date. I am not sure how many he owns, but it is a very high percentage of the overall number. Last Christmas for his birthday I created a bearded bunny in a postal uniform to honor him, since he is a postal carrier. For his birthday I modified my dragon bunny and created a silver and gold dragon variation including wings that spread out far beyond the edge of the frame:

The great about creating variation of my bearded bunnies series is that it is a fun way to pay homage to your own creations and give them new life. Often times its easy to get sick of your own designs simply be seeing them too often and for long periods of time. Being able to step back and add or subtract from your creation to make something different is a good way to fall in love with it all over again. It can also be a painful lesson in turning something beautiful into to something terrible, but that process has its own benefits. I am reminded of Jasper John or Andy Warhol or Jim Dine who used printing processes to made millions of copies or variations of the same images, American Flags, Mickey Mouse, Marilyn Monroe, and many others. I find this process more fun that one could imagine.

In the very near future I will show you pictures from the 50 other bearded bunny variations I did for Art O Mat antique art vending machines. Found all across america. Stay tuned for that!
